Psyllium husk or Metamucil is often taken for constipation relief laxative or as a fiber supplement. You should always ensure that you drink lot of water or other fluids and do not take more than the recommended dose.  Otherwise, it can lead to more constipation and sometimes blockages in the intestines.

What is Psyllium Husk

When taken as a supplement it can be used for treating two opposite problems – Constipation and Diarrhea.  It works primarily by acting as a dietary fiber when it absorbs lots of waters and bulks the stool. So it is safe to take Psyllium husk everyday?  As per the company which manufactures Metamucil (which contains Psyllium as its primary ingredients) it is safe to take it everyday as long as you take required quantity of water.

Adequate Water Intake

Around 70% of our body is water.  It is important to maintain proper fluild level in our body and for that you need to drink large quantities of water everyday.  Water is required by each and every organ to work properly.  While taking supplements such as Psyllium it it even more important to take sufficient water as it absorbs lots of water.  One of the best ways to fulfill your water requirements is to take around 1.5 liters of water in early morning and then take water throughout the day.

In take you take the husk, take a glass or two more when as soon as you take the Psyllium.

Importance of Dietary Fiber

Dietary fiber is very important for our health.  Dietary fiber helps the body eliminate toxins and undigested food from the bowels.  If food lacks in fiber it will start sticking to the intestinal walls, and cause constipation and toxins will go into the blood stream.  Around 25 to 30 grams of fiber is recommended daily.

Precaution

You should always consult your doctor when under medication and you want to take Psyllium.  The reason is sometimes Psyllium can interfere with the way medication is absorbed in the body.  You should also be careful if you have stomach ulcers or under some intestinal or stomach diseases.
