Grapefruits are entirely different kind of fruits are compared to grapes. They come under the category of Citrus plants. Grapefruits are not an ancient species. They evolved as hybdrid of Oranges and Pomelo. It is believed that they originated from Barbados.
They have varying degrees of colors from white to pink to red. Usually redder the color sweeter they are. The most popular variety is the Ruby Red which is the state fruit of Texas.
Many people prefer grapefruit more than Oranges as they find it tastier and more flavorful. They are also bigger than Oranges.
Fiber and Other Nutrients in Grapefruits
Grapefruits contains around 6% fiber which means for 100 grams in weight around 6 grams is fiber. There other minerals present in Grapefruit are Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Vitamin B1. It also contains Biotin which is good for the skin, hair and nails.
Since grapefruits are low in calories and high in nutrients, it is ideal fruit to include in your meals. Usually eating such fruits before meals reduces satiety which will cause you to consume lesser amount of food in the meal.
Health Benefits of Grapefruits
Presence of Vitamin C which is present in all citrus fruits means that your immune system will improve with regular consumption and you will gain immunity against cold and flu as has been shown in large number of researches. Vitamin C also prevents free radicals from damaging you internally and reduces inflammation. Hence you remain protected from many inflammation related diseases such as arthritis, gout and asthma.
Grapefruits are very bright colored fruits which means they are a good source of Lycopene. Lycopenes are natural tumor and cancer fighting agent. Lycopene can fight with compounds called free radicals which are deprived of Oxygen and cause cancer. In a study it was found that people who consumed colorful fruits such as Grapefruits, Guava, Tomatoes and Papaya had 82% less chances of suffering from Prostrate cancer.
In another study conducted by University of Glagow for Phenolic compounds it was found that grapefruits contained one of the highest content of Phenolic compound.
They have also been found useful in preventing Kidney stone and protects against Colon cancer. One study found that drinking half a litre of Apple or grapefruit juice significantly reduced the formation of calcium oxylate stones which are the cause of Kidney stones.
It was also found that regularly taking grapefruit juice increased the suicide of cancer cells.
Grapefruit contains soluble fiber which is proven to reduce cholesterol and leading to healthy heart health. It was also found that red grapefruit decrease LDL (bad cholesterol) by 15.5% in just 30 days. They were also helpful in reducing Triglycerides.
As per a research which was done to measure the effectiveness of Grapefruit on metabolic syndrome found that it was highly effective in weight loss. For the study 91 patients were selected to see if there was any effect on obesity when grapefruit was consumed. The patients were divided into several group which included those who took placebo, apple juice, grapefruit juice and half a piece of grapefruit.
At the end of 12 weeks it was found that those who took fresh grapefruit juice or half a grapefruit lost around 1.5 Kilograms of weight as compared to just 0.3 Kilograms for those on placebo.
How To Eat
The best or the easiest way to eat is to slice them up and eat them. You can also eat them with Salads or make fresh juice at home and drink them regularly. One word of caution. Try to avoid buying juice from stores which contain sugar mixed with the juice. The additional sugar destroys the nutritional qualities and you will not get the benefits mentioned above.
