One of the great benefits of psyllium husk is its ability to reduce cholesterol levels in the blood and the body. If you have healthy cholesterol levels you will be able to avoid many diseases and conditions however if you have high levels of Cholesterol it can increase the chances of heart diseases greatly.  In this article we will see how Metamucil or Psyllium helps in lowering cholesterol levels.

What is Cholesterol

Before we learn on the effects of metamucil or Psyllium on Cholesterol levels let us see in brief what exactly is cholesterol.  Cholesterol is a greasy or waxy matter which is produced by the liver.  Cholesterol has various functions in the body such as proper synthesis of certain hormones, digest fat and repair and building of cell walls.

Types of Cholesterol

There are two type of cholesterol LDL and HDL. LDL is acronym for Low Density Lipoproteins. and HDL stands for High Density Lipoproteins. LDL can clog up the blood vessels and when this happens in the blood vessels of the heart it can result in many diseases including heart attacks and high blood pressure.  HDL on the other hand is considered as the good cholesterol and it removes the LDL from the blood vessels.

How Cholesterol Can Harm You?

As mentioned above LDL is sticky cholesterol which starts sticking to the walls of the blood vessels. This is known as plaque. This causes two kinds of problems. Firstly the blood vessels becomes less flexible and they also narrow down which increases the blood pressure. Over long term gradual accumulation of cholesterol can result in blockage in the blood vessel which can cause heart attack and stroke.

How Metamucil Or Psyllium Helps in Reducing Cholesterol Levels

As per one of the many studies on cholesterol lowering effects of psyllium it was found the taking 10 grams of psyllium for 8 weeks along with low fat diet were able to reduce their LDL cholesterol levels by 7%.

Psyllium absorbs extra cholesterol from the blood and eliminates it which causes the LDL cholesterol levels to drop. If you are suffering from very high levels of cholesterol then you should take it twice or thrice daily before the meal time.

Apart from Psyllium you should also take low fat diet, exercise regularly and take Omega 3 fish oil capsules in case you suffer from high cholesterol levels.
