If I tell you that Metamucil or Psyllium can be used for weight loss what would be your reaction? Will you be suspicious? Or may be you may think that I am joking. Some of you may be thinking that even if this is true it may be dangerous in long term.

Metamucil is a dietary fiber supplement which contains Psyllium as the main ingredient.  That is the reason that you will find me using the terms Psyllium and Metamucil through out this article.  Just remember that both of them have similar properties hence you will get similar results from them.

In this article I would like to explain why it may be a good option to include Psyllium or Metamucil as a part of your weight loss program.

Does it Work?

In case you are wondering if Metamucil is effective for weight loss, the answer is Yes.  There have been many cases where people have successfully reduced weight using fiber supplements.  For example you can read one story of how a girl reduced 20 pounds with Metamucil.

Is it Safe to Use a Metamucil or Psyllium for Weight Loss?

Before you think of reducing weight using Metamucil let me answer the following question which may occur in your mind.  The first question that may come to your mind is – “Is it safe to use a laxative for weight loss?”

This is a very common question.  This question arises since most people use this fiber supplement for constipation relief.  My answer to the question is do not think of Psyllium or Metamucil as a laxative. Think of it as a fiber supplement.

As you may have heard and read, fibers are very important for health and should be included in our meals regularly. Psyllium is a water soluble fiber. When you take this fiber along with sufficient quantity of water it creates bulk in the intestine and helps in eliminating the stool.

But that is only half the story.  Metamucil can trap extra fat and cholesterol present in the intestinal tracts.  Psyllium fiber in Metamucil acts like a sponge and traps the extra fat and also reduces the overall cholesterol levels in the body. Hence it is a healthy way to lose weight.

Another good part is it forces you to drink lot of water which is always good for health.

Why Metamucil or Psyllium is Good for Weight Loss?

Although there can be many reasons for obesity including certain health condition such as Thyroid problem but the main reason for most people is Cravings for sugar and high carbs foods.  Cravings for carbs are the main reason most people cannot control themselves. More carbs you eat greater will be your craving. It is a viscous cycle.

More carbs you take, the brain creates more cravings for carbs. This is due to the fact that carbs causes huge spike in blood sugar, which causes the fat storage hormone called insulin to be releases. Insulin removes the the blood sugar very fast from the blood.  This causes cravings in the brain which signals the body to eat more carbs. These carbs end up as fat in out body when insulin removes the sugar from the blood.

How Metamucil of Psyllium Can Help reducing Craving

When you take psyllium before the meal the craving or appetite is reduced which causes you to eat less food. In turn the cravings are also reduced which helps in the weight loss.

Psyllium can be taken before the food and for best results take it in the day time. Taking it half an hour before food is a great way to lose weight. The reason is it will make you feel fuller. Also it taking it near to the food time will allow this fiber to mix with the food and prevent the fats from getting absorbed in the body.

It also reduces food cravings which can cause binge eating.

Taking fiber supplements also cleans up the toxins from the colon and our body.  When you take Metamucil the colon is cleansed which reduces the toxin levels in your body.  Your body can then absorb the nutrients from the foods easily.  When you body can take in nutrients it is nourished properly and cravings also reduce automatically.

Psyllium For Weight Loss

Remember that for this reason it is better to take proper and nutritious food and not rely only on Psyllium for weight loss while taking unhealthy food. This should be viewed as an additional step towards healthy body along with other healthy practices such as proper exercises and good food habits.

How Fast is the Weight Loss?

The weight loss is around half pound a week for most people.  Some people may lose more weight – may be around one pound  a week. It depends on your diet, current body fat percent etc.

Remember that apart from fiber supplement there are many other aspects to healthy weight loss.  These factors include reducing or eliminating table sugar, product containing high fructose corn syrup and highly processed foods and bakery products with hydrogenated fats.

Try to eat other nutrient rich foods such as nuts like almonds, walnuts, green veggies and fruits like tomatoes, oranges and pineapple and avocados.

If you follow the above suggestion you will see that you will become gradually become healthier and lighter in few weeks.

What is the Recommended Quantity?

It depends from person to person depending on your body weight. For most of the obese adults we would suggest taking one to two table spoon with one glass of water before each meal.  If you are going to take it for long time you should take 1 tablespoon two times a day.

A Word of Caution

If you are planning to take Metamucil or any other fiber supplements while on some medication or suffer from any healthy conditions please contact your doctor.  Ask if your condition allows you to take fiber supplements safely.  Once you get permission from your doctor then you can proceed with small dose.  Then you can gradually increase the dose.
