Metamucil Product Review

Metamucil is one of the most popular dietary fiber supplement available in the marketplace.  I also searched Amazon for the popular dietary fiber product and found that metamucil was 9th in the list.  You can find the list of popular dietaty supplements here at

Metamucil is one of the oldest brands which is  over 75 years old.  Metamucil is a product which can be a source of soluble fiber for you although it also contains insoluble fiber.

The core ingredient of metamucil is psyllium husk.  Psyllium Husk, a natural dietary fiber originating from the psyllium plant, has been the source of both soluble and insoluble fiber in Metamucil for around 80 years. Metamucil claims that psyllium in Metamucil works differently than other non-viscous fibers. They claim that metamucil can give you multiple health benefits.  Psyllium is extracted from plantago ovata which is a source of both soluble and insoluble fiber.

Dietary fiber should be consumed as part of our regular diet and American Dietetic Association recommends consumption of 25 grams for women and 38 grams of fiber for men every day.  However the fact is most people in America only consumes around 14 to 15 grams of fiber per day.  The shortfall can be covered with the help of dietary fiber supplements.  Metamucil is one of the options to fulfill that need.

Some positive attributes of Metamucil

The main difference between metamucil which is Psyllium based compared to other supplements which are non Psyllium based, is the formation of gel like constitution when Psyllium is mixed with water.

Metamucil has net zero calories from Carbohydrates since most of it is dietary fiber which cannot be digested by us.  In fact it take more energy to process metamucil by our body.

When Psyllium comes in touch with liquids such as water in the intestines, it thickens and forms a gel that traps some sugars and carbohydrates.  Carbohydrates turns into sugars the fastest compared to protein and fats.  Most people who are type 2 diabetic would prefer that the blood sugar levels rise slowly.

As the psyllium gel moves down the intestine, trapped sugars are slowly released and absorbed into the body, helping maintain healthy blood sugar levels.  The slow release of sugars is not harmful as body gets enough time to process them and take out the sugars from the blood.  This has many positive affects on health as will be discussed below.

Although metamucil has various benefits but most people consume this for bowel regularity.

What are the ingredients in Metamucil

Metamucil is available in different flavors and forms.  However the core and the common ingredient of metamucil is psyllium fiber.  Let is see in details the ingredients which are available in the various products of metamucil.

Ingredient 1 – Psyllium

Fiber In MetamucilPsyllium husk is a natural soluble fiber that comes from the plant called Plantago Ovata. Plantago Ovata develops seeds that are coated in a gel like substance which is called psyllium husk. The substance is extracted from the seeds and freeze dried to create psyllium. The natural soluble fiber psyllium is one of the main ingredients in bulk laxatives. Since psyllium is a soluble fiber it absorbs water and swells, which adds bulk to feces and can relieve constipation or diarrhea. To keep from having any uncomfortable side effects, six to eight glasses of water must be consumed a day.

Ingredient 2 – Maltodextrin

Maltodextrin is a polysaccharide that is used as a food additive. It is produced from starch by partial hydrolysis and is usually found as a white hygroscopic spray-dried powder.  Maltodextrin is easily digestible.  Maltodextrin is used as an additive to thicken food products and serves the same purpose in metamucil.

Precaution – Maltodextrin can cause spikes in your blood sugar because it has a high glycemic index. You may want to avoid maltodextrin if you have diabetes or insulin resistance.  So avoid the specific flavor which contains this compound.  For example Metamucil Orange sugar free product contains this product.

Ingredient 3 – Sucrose

Sucrose is found in nature in many fruits and it is one of the three basic sugars which include glucose, fructose and sucrose.  Sucrose adds sweetness to foods and one of the major sources of sucrose is sugarcane.  Other popular sources include beets, nectars etc.

Ingredient 4 – Citric Acid

Citric acid is a chemical present in Citrus fruits such as lemon and oranges.  They are added to food to increase the flavor and also to preserve it longer.

Ingredient 5 – Natural and Artificial Orange Flavor

Artificial flavors are added to food to give a feel of certain naturally occurring fruits.  Metamucil orange provides the orange flavor for easier and more pleasant consumption.

Ingredient 6 – Yellow 6

It is an artificial dye and a food additive which is petroleum based which is used to enhance the color of the food product.  As per IIBFY ( website this additive is bad and considered poisonous for you.  Our recommendation will be to avoid food which have this chemical added which includes the metamucil orange flavors.

Ingredient  7 – Aspartame

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener which is added to many food labeled as sugar free.  There are many studies and controversies surrounding this product.  However some research suggest that in limited quantities it may not be harmful.  This is regularly added to many product including soft drinks.

Can Metamucil Help In Weight Loss

Yes metamucil can help you reduce weight. If you take metamucil regularly then you will see gradual reduction in weight.  The main reason is metamucil slows down the release of sugar from digested foods to the blood stream.  It give the body more time to metabolize the food.  Another reason is metamucil reduces hunger.  Due to this the cravings are reduces which decreases the food intake.  All these factors help in reducing the extra fat.  For more information on how metamucil can reduce weight read this article here.

Here is a video testimonial from a metamucil user who lost weight by using metamucil regularly.

Precautions and Side Effects of Metamucil

One of the major precaution while taking metamucil is to have sufficient quantity of water.  Metamucil recommends consumption of at least 8 ounces of water around the time you take the supplement.  Taking without enough liquid may cause chocking. If you have swallowing problem then do not take this product.

In some people it can also cause nausea, headaches, and diarrhea.  People who have IBS may be more prone to side effects.  Some people are allergic to Psyllium and they should stay away from metamucil.

If you are on some Vitamins and some drugs on prescription, you should not take metamucil around 2 hours after you take the drugs.  You should consult your doctor when taking metamucil if you are some prescription drug.

Health Benefits of Metamucil

Constipation Relief – This is the most obvious benefit of metamucil.  Psylium in Metamucil form gel formation which can trap the food being digested and it takes along and helps in elimination.  Most people report positive benefit in bowel movements when they start consuming metamucil.

Improved Heart Health – Metamucil can take away extra bad cholesterol by trapping it in the gel formed by metamucil in the guts.  This helps in reducing LDL cholesterol and improves the heart health.  LDL cholesterol can gradually get deposited in the arteries of the heart and cause heart diseases such as heart attack.  When LDL cholesterol is not allowed to increase it reduces the chances of heart disease.

Weight Loss : It helps in losing extra weight as mentioned above due to less craving due to reduced hunger and slowing of the absorption of sugars from the digested food.

Improved Blood Sugar Control – When you consume metamucil before the food it will not allow the sugar to be absorbed quickly from the food being digested.  Due to this blood sugar levels remain relatively stable which helps in have stable blood sugar level.  This is very good for general health for all of us and particularly helpful for people who suffer from Type 2 diabetes.

Metamucil Reviews

I visited and looked for reviews from people who have actually purchased this product.  Presented below are some of the positive and negative review for this product.

Positive Reviews

Most of the review which were positive mentioned how it helped them get relief from constipation.  Here are some positive reviews –

They really work. I take 5 pills twice a day and it does the job. Make sure you do not take any medicines or vitamins within two hours of taking this product as the fiber in Metamucil will absorb it and you will loose the effect of your medicine.

This is my favorite brand of psyllium husk fiber. Great way to increase dietary fiber. The capsules are easier to take than the loose psyllium which must be mixed with liquid and taken as a drink (yuck!). Other brands I’ve checked out all have added ingredients. Metamucil is the only one that is JUST psyllium husk in a gelatin capsule.

KSAMazon ~

I really like this product! I would much rather take capsules with water than anything I have to mix with a liquid. I take the recommended 5 capsules each morning and another 5 in the afternoon (others may not need to take it twice!) and I NEVER have a problem with “digestive issues”!

Negative Reviews

Only 11% of the reviews had 1 and 2 star rating in amazon.  Most of the negative reviews were about too much capsule intake for it to work or the product being too costly.  Here are some of those negative reviews –

Absolutely NO DIFFERENT from generics and same ingredients in same portion ~ Don’t believe the brand name hype ~ You are paying for nothing but those silly TV commercials … Read the label, and find the same thing at DOLLAR GENERAL in a generic, for less money …

Pony ~

Good product , my issue is cost verses Walmart

Rickey ~

I won’t buy these again. I would recommend the powder form. I really don’t like taking 10 or more pills a day. Forget it!

Mama ~

Five capsule per serving, and 4 four servings per day?! So I have to stomach TWENTY of these capsules a day for a mere 60% of my daily fiber?? Not to mention there’s only 100 capsules per bottle, making this a whopping five day supply…. what a joke.

Tyler ~

Is Metamucil Gluten Free

Metamucil Wafer contains wheat hence it is not gluten free.  The fiber bar version also contains wheat as content hence not gluten free.

However the other products do not contain wheat hence they are gluten free.

What To Do If You Have Gas Due To Metamucil

In case you have excess gas after taking metamucil you can take Citrucel.
